Looking for a new soundtrack to your moody autumn walks? Tired of feeling like you’ve poured all your energy into a failing relationship? Kid Primitive’s got you covered for both; their new single, “Wasted Hours”, is here!

Hailing all the way from Cleveland, Ohio, Kid Primitive is a four piece alternative rock band who combine lush soundscapes with groovy, danceable basslines. Comprised of KJ Mueller (vocals and guitar), Jonas Evans (guitar), Steve Martis (bass), and John Finley (drums), their singles feel as consistently fresh as the nature motifs in their cover art. “Wasted Hours”, released last Friday on October 23rd, is no different.

Upon my first listen, I was greeted by this track’s smooth production quality. Guitar strumming floats over samples of (what sounds like) cheers, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that slips into the bass and vocals. Poetic lyrics describe a strained relationship that the speaker has spent so much time trying to fix, then suddenly–the song breaks into a totally different style.

Something I adore about "Wasted Hours” is the many different sections packed into this song, even if it’s only 4 minutes and 23 seconds long. The transitions are sometimes abrupt, with one part falling into the next, creating the unrelenting feeling of time passing. This track will tease you with half of the bridge, then pick up the pace for a funky wah-wah pedal fueled bass solo, throw you back into the next bridge, where only then can you feel the sweet release of the chorus on full blast. If that weren’t enough already, you get a sick guitar solo pushing you through to the finish line. The ending always leaves me wanting more, but in a way that feels dramatic and intentional, and has me hitting replay over and over.

“Wasted Hours” is a song you don’t want to miss out on. I was lucky enough to have seen Kid Primitive live at Cobra Lounge in Chicago back in July, when my friend Cara Goldstone was photographing their performance. They played a set alongside some of my favorite Bitter Jester Music Festival veterans Versus Vitality and Exit 122, as well as Chicago-based band Paper Hotel, but their music absolutely held up on its own. It left an impression on me with its colorful style and skilled instrumentation, and I was ecstatic at the opportunity to write a feature on their new single. I can’t wait to see what this band does next!
