My Don Byas Review Got Me Published!
There will always be a place in my life's history for Don Byas because his record, Don Byas Meets Ben Webster, was the very first jazz record I reviewed. I was barely 20 and while I was thrilled to have a chance to review something besides rock and soul and blues, this task was mildly intimidating. Especially so because the publisher of the magazine I was writing for was an older African American man who always talked about jazz and who didn't really seem to like contemporary rock and r&b. He liked my review, though, and published it. This was over 45 years ago!
