Today at the Soul Station, I present the Curits Mayfield's SuperFly and Back To The World albums.
SuperFly was the third solo album that came out on his record label Curtom after he left The Impressions in 1970. SuperFly charted at number one album for Pop and R&B in 1972 and believe it or not is also charted at number 2 album in Billboard's Jazz charts. The first two tracks you'll hear today is "Little Child Runnin' Wild" and "Pusherman". We'll also hear the big hit 45 single released in July of 1972 "Freddie's Dead" and it charted number 4 record for Pop. We will also hear an instrumental track of two from SuperFly and this B-side from October in 1973 is called "Think". SuperFly brought back the great "Johnny Pate" as orchestrator and arranger.

Back to the World came out in May of 1973 and "Rich Tufo" arranges, plays keyboards and organ. This album addresses social themes like a soldier retuning from Vietnam which was dark and sometimes slightly positive in a bittersweet way. Back to the World charted at 16 on Billboard's albums and number one one Billbord's R&B albums. You'll hear "Back to the World", the big 45 hit "Future Shock", and "Right On For The Darkness" which spowned a cover by Willy Wright on 45 in 1974. We end the progam with "Can't Say Nothin'" and "Keep On Trippin' ".
Curtis Mayfield's funky soulful music from the seventies brought forward views about this country's bad politics, bad racism, and other broken social themes which are still being addressed today.
